Defensive Driving/Fleet Training

This legal requirement applies as much to employees who drive as part of their job as it does to employees who work in a factory or office environment.
This means that employers need to manage road risk in the same way they manage other occupational health and safety risks.
Every employer has a legal responsibility to make a regular assessment of the risks to the health and safety of their employees while at work, and to take remedial action as necessary.

Drive Shetland use only trainers on the Driving Standards Agency Fleet Register and who are also holders of the RoSPA Diploma in Advanced Driving Instruction ensuring the highest standard of training to meet your companies’ needs. Utilising this expertise, we’ve developed a range of products that allow Fleet Controllers to assess the drivers on their fleet and then address their individual needs as appropriate.
Our product range has been designed to simplify the assessment and identification of training needs for your fleet drivers, whatever the size of your fleet.

Standard Course

Part Practical Defensive Driving Course
This is the most popular course which most of our clients choose and works best for groups of between 2 to 10 drivers at a time and can be held anywhere in the UK. We will need a room for the theory session and sufficient vehicles for the in vehicle training (IVT). We can supply all audio visual equipment if not available on site.

The Theory Session, which lasts about three hours, starts with an introduction to the principles of defensive driving where the delegates are encouraged to debate the problems that they face on the road. We then examine the most common accident situations, what causes them and look at how they can be avoided. Topics such as Winter Driving and Personal Security can also be included upon request.

The In Vehicle Training starts with a vehicle inspection and an eyesight check. Each delegate then has an assessment drive so that we can establish an idea of their ability. Our Instructor will then give a demonstration drive with a commentary to demonstrate just how far ahead it is possible to plan. The principles of a "Systematic" approach based on the police driving manual "Roadcraft" will be demonstrated in this drive. Your colleagues will then be invited to take a second turn behind the wheel and receive helpful tuition and advice aimed at improving observation anticipation and planning. This can be done on a 1:1basis or 2 trainees per one instructor.

A full written report and Certificate of Attendance will be provided for each driver. This will highlight any areas that can be improved. If we identify any drivers who we feel would benefit from further help we will discreetly contact you and arrange a further 1:1 in vehicle session.

What if............. a driver needs further training? A vehicle is in poor condition? A driver has poor eyesight? These and any other items are reported back to you with a "For Your Information" sheet so that your line managers can be made aware of the problem. Our aim is to help you to achieve a cultural change with the company drivers so that they apply the same safety standards that they would expect on within the workplace to their vehicle and behaviour on the road.

Our Trainers are Department of Transport Approved Driving Instructors (ADI's) and on the Fleet Trainers Register as well as holding the RoSPA Diploma in Advanced Driving Instruction. Our trainers are also Fire Service Instructors and have advanced driving and instructor qualifications. Above all they are all good communicators who can pitch the level of training to suit the abilities and experience of individual drivers.
